LOS ILLINIZAS

Illinizas has two peaks which top out at 5,120 meters and 5,266 meters above sea level.

Its impressive beauty and its difficult access makes it a challenge for the climbers and adventures. Its ecological reserve, (21000 ha =51,891.92 acres) has a huge forest and is home to many animals of Ecuador


 


 QUILOTOA LAGOON

A salty water lagoon (3 km of diameter) located in the crater of the Quilotoa Volcano.


Its emerald green color contrasts with the vivid blue celestial sky.
It is a place of singular beauty and enchantment in the middle of the Andes.

In order to arrive there, you must pass through a very small Indian town called Tigua, whose inhabitants are painters.

They use ancient techniques, using lambskin as their canvas and seeds for color and shape to their pictures.

 

 

INDIGENOUS MARKET

Saquisili & Pujili

Ecuadorians travel from far away to buy, sell and exchange livestock, food for their animals, products for their farms and their handcrafts in this picturesque Indian market.

 

Important:
This indian maket is not aimed for tourist.... it is for natives, and their needs.
So, you may not find it as nice and clean as the "Otavalo" indian Market.   


CELEBRATIONS OF CORPUS CRISTI

This celebration does it all.  It celebrates the combination of passion for the "catholic religion" (La Virgen de la Merced) with the "Incas religion" (the God - Sun).

It celebrates, the different areas this country has to offer....  beach area, the mountains, and the forest areas.  You will notice the difference in their clothing. (or the lack of)

And finally, it celebrates the different races: the white, the indian, the black and the mestizo (mix).

LA MAMA NEGRA

This is a traditional parade which has participants from schools, law enforcement, bands and the general town folk.

This is a great and colorful parade which takes place on the 24th of September and another one on the 11th of November in Latacunga.
 
This is to Thanks the "Virgen de las Mercedes" for the fertility of the land and the high production of food.
